Every year, approximately six million donkeys are slaughtered worldwide for the production of ejiao, a traditional Chinese medicine product made with collagen extracted from their hides. This trade has profound economic and social impacts, particularly in rural African communities, where women and children are most affected.

In Brazil, where the donkey is part of the culture and a symbol of resilience and adaptation to the semi-arid climate, the population of these animals has decreased by 94% in the last four decades. Faced with this scenario, bills are being proposed to prohibit the slaughter and export of donkeys, promoting sustainable alternatives that guarantee the preservation of the species and the cultural legacy it represents.
